What Are the Pros and Cons of Wix?
Wix is our top-rated website builder, achieving an overall score of 4.8 out of 5 in our research and testing. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a builder that’s easy to use, has a wealth of extra features, and offers great creative control. Check out its full pros and cons below:
Pros
✔️ Wix’s drag-and-drop building tools make its editor extremely easy to use, even for beginners with no tech experience
✔️ Great online store offering – Wix has a great selection of ecommerce tools that make it a top choice if you’re looking to open an online store
✔️ Everything you need to grow and scale – Its impressive features and extensive app store means that it has the tools you need, no matter what size website you’re building
✔️ Tons of flexibility and creative freedom, meaning you can easily customize your template so it looks exactly how you want it
Cons
❌ You can’t switch your template once you’ve published your site without starting again from scratch
❌ For advanced functionality, you may have to pay extra to install third-party apps
❌ Can feel overwhelming when you first load the Wix editor – there’s a lot of features and design options, which can feel a tad daunting to start with
❌ Wix’s best features are locked behind premium plans, so you’ll need to pay more if you want to access them
Who Should Use Wix? And Who Should Avoid It?
Wix is perfect for small businesses, creatives, and beginners:- It’s feature-rich, with awesome SEO tools and hundreds of apps
- You choose from over 800 professionally designed and fully customizable templates
- Anyone can create a beautiful website with Wix, even if you have no tech experience
However, we know Wix isn’t for everyone. If you want hands-on control over every aspect of your site, Wix isn’t for you. Although the level of creative control is almost limitless, there are some boundaries that mean not everything is doable with the simple click of a button. Plus, you won’t be able to get the same level of insight into the nitty-gritty technical aspects of your site’s maintenance as you would with a content management system.
You don’t get a say over your site’s hosting, updates, or uptime. So Wix is best if you want something easy to manage because it does all the hard work for you.
For this review, we’re going to focus on Wix as a website builder, but did you also know that it’s our top-rated ecommerce platform, too? This means it’s an awesome option if you’re looking to build an online store, or even if you just want to sell a little something on the side.
If you like the sound of all this, and you think Wix could be for you, read on for our full review!
Overview of Wix
Currently, Wix has over 250 million users across 190 countries worldwide. Its popularity is largely down to how easy it is to use – in the past, you needed coding skills to create a professional-looking website, but these days anyone can do it. And Wix makes it especially easy.
Wix comes with a big reputation, but here at Website Builder Expert, it’s our job to scratch beneath the surface and tell you exactly how good it is. We’ve spent years testing, reviewing, and recommending website builders to help our readers grow their online presence.
Unlike many Wix reviews, here at Website Builder Expert, we conduct our own thorough research and testing to bring you expert analysis.
Throughout this review of Wix, we’ll help you explore its strengths and weaknesses, how suitable Wix is for different types of websites, and how it fared when we put it through its paces.
Wix Rating: Breakdown
Wix is the best website builder on the market, scoring 4.8 out of 5 in our recent research. But how did we come to this decision? We researched and tested over 50 website builders, including Wix, and focused on the following areas:
- Website features
- Design functionalities
- Value for money
- Help and support
- Customer satisfaction
- Ease of use
We also got people to build websites using Wix and rate their experience with the builder, meaning we could gather real feedback on ease of use and customer satisfaction.
All of this helps us rate Wix as a website builder and fairly compare it to others in the market.
Before we dive into the rating overview, we want to flag that our 2023 research identified a shift in pricing across every website builder – not just Wix! So, we’ve adjusted our approach to our value for money score. We now focus more on “feature vs price”, and not just the average pricing plan.
We’ve also given extra weight to marketing, ecommerce, and design this year. Not only do we know that our readers care about these features especially, but they’re key if you’re looking to grow online.
Heads up!
In this review, we’re going to be focusing on Wix as a website builder. If you’re more interested in using Wix to build an online store, we’d recommend checking out our Wix Ecommerce Review, instead. After thoroughly testing Wix, listening to feedback from users, and comparing it with other top website builders on the market, we can confidently say that Wix is an excellent website builder for the right users.“Wix is pretty simple to use and easy to wrap your head around! Plus I really love the customization available, especially the templates and pre-designed elements.”
Overall, we recommend Wix for anyone who wants an easy, enjoyable building experience without sacrificing looks or features. Wix is particularly good for small businesses due to its in-house functionality, SEO tools, and powerful marketing features.
Wix Review Video
Whether you’re a computer whiz or just have a grasp of the basics, Wix is fast and easy to use for everyone – including our team members Hannah and Dan, who’ve spent countless hours testing this builder out themselves. See what they have to say about Wix below:
Wix User Reviews
Wix scores an impressive 4.7 out of 5 for customer satisfaction in our research – the best score out of all the website builders we tested. It also scores a top rating of 4.4 out of 5 for ease of use, but how do real users find Wix?
Well, we actually calculate these scores by asking real users just how easy a builder is to use, and whether they would recommend it to their friends.
We reached out to various Wix users for insight into their own experience of using the website builder to create and grow their online business.
Wix is super user-friendly and made it easy for a first-time website builder to do everything…
I have very little experience doing website work, but I found Wix intuitive and easy to work with.

How Easy Is Wix to Use?
In our latest research, Wix maintains its score of 4.4 out of 5 for ease of use, making it the joint highest website builder in this category – sharing the crown with Squarespace.
We asked lots of everyday people to give Wix a try and tell us what they thought.
The feedback we got speaks for itself – most people loved Wix! Here are just a couple of their thoughts:
“I love it! Having worked on creating a website the other day with another builder, Wix is a breath of fresh air to use! So simple and easy that it makes a mockery of other builders.”
“The prebuilt options allowed you to add entire sections really easily. It’s so quick!”
However, no website builder can make everyone happy, so here’s what people didn’t find so easy about using Wix:
“Wix’s templates are nice on the whole, but they can easily become messy or cluttered by the time you’ve finished customizing.”
“Whether it’d be good for those building a business is debatable because of slow load speeds.”
A massive 80% of people who used it would highly recommend Wix to a friend.
To put that score into some context for you, that recommendation is:
- 7.5% higher than GoDaddy
- 40% higher than Weebly
- 65% higher than WordPress.com
People loved the freedom Wix gave them when editing, and just how easy it was to drag and drop things around their website. They were also amazed at just how quickly they could create something they’d be happy to publish online.
The only criticism people had was that Wix can feel overwhelming to begin with. There’s so much choice – in templates, features, and customization – that it takes a few minutes to settle into the platform.
For pure ease of use and creative control, though, Wix is hard to beat, with the highest overall customer score of 4.7 out of 5.
Which Wix Editor Is Easier?
With Wix, you have two choices – Wix ADI or Wix Editor:
- Wix ADI designs your website for you, based on your answers to a few questions. You can make edits to the final design, but this process is not ideal if you want total control.
- Wix Editor uses drag-and-drop functionality, meaning anything on your website can be repositioned simply by clicking and holding the item, then moving it where you want.
Wix ADI is easier to use because it does most of the hard work for you by creating a website bespoke to your needs. All you need to do is tweak it a little and you’re ready to publish! However, we recommend the classic Wix Editor instead – it’s still super easy, but gives you more creative control.
For those who are a little more tech-savvy, you can also use Velo by Wix. This lets you access and edit the raw HTML behind your template for even greater customization. Using Velo by Wix is by no means essential, but the option’s there if you want to dig a little deeper.

Wix Pricing and Value for Money
Overall, Wix is a little pricier than other website builders on the market, with its cheapest plan starting at $16 per month (billed annually). It scores an underwhelming 3 out of 5 in our value for money testing – a rating drop of almost 12% since last year. But, as we’ve already mentioned, pricing across every website builder has increased, and Wix’s offerings still make it a strong option.
Wix has an impressive free plan (ranked as our #1 best free website builder), plus a two-week money-back guarantee on all four of its paid plans. Wix also offers a high-end business solution called Wix Enterprise, which is a custom price plan designed for big businesses. And if you want to sell through your Wix website, you’ll need to pick one of the three ecommerce-specific plans.
The more time you sign up for in advance, the better value your premium Wix plan will be. For example, you’ll end up paying less per month when you choose an annual pricing plan. Check out the differences in each Wix plan below:
Plan | Paid Monthly | Paid Yearly |
---|---|---|
Light | $23/month | $16/month |
Core | $34/month | $27/month |
Business | $38/month | $32/month |
Business Elite | $172/month | $159/month |
With the recent price hikes, Wix’s starting Light plan might be the most affordable of the lot, but if you want the most cost-effective plan and access to the best of Wix’s features, you’ll need to upgrade.
Wix’s Core plan offers a great starting point for an affordable price. It’s designed for small businesses looking to build engagement with their audience. You get a free logo – normally worth $50 – plus access to the Events Calendar app and social media logo files.
Wix’s most popular plan, though, is its Business plan which costs $32 per month (billed annually). Unsurprisingly, you get unlimited bandwidth, 100GB of storage, advanced shipping tools, and access to all of Wix’s main help services, features, and apps.

How Good Are Wix’s Templates?
Wix has over 800 templates to choose from. While they’re all professionally designed, some look better than others, and since last year, Wix has expanded its offering of templates to keep up with the latest trends and requirements, including templates for interior designers. We recommend taking the time to choose your template carefully – especially because you can’t switch designs once your site is live.
Despite some designs looking a little dated, on the whole, you’ll find that most designs are bang up-to-date with the latest trends.
All Wix templates are categorized into types of websites – such as business, blogging, and photography – and they’re completely mobile responsive. This means your website will adjust automatically to fit both mobile and tablet screen sizes.
What the Experts Think
We spoke with an industry-leading web design expert, Joe Moran, creator of The Pixel Producer, to get their opinion on Wix’s templates compared to other top platforms out there. Here’s what they had to say:“Wix offers a wide variety of professionally designed templates for different types of websites, such as business, portfolio, online store, blog, and more. The templates are visually appealing and customizable, allowing users to easily adjust fonts, colors, layouts, and other elements to match their brand and preferences.
Compared to Squarespace, Wix’s templates are more versatile and offer more design flexibility, but some may argue that Squarespace’s templates are more polished and consistent in terms of aesthetics.”
Design Customization
We put Wix’s design functionality to the test in our latest website builder research, and its score for design has improved by 4.5% since last year – from 4.4 out of 5 to a new rating of 4.6 out of 5. This puts Wix in second place for design, sitting just behind Squarespace.
Supported by a huge app market and built-in features, Wix offers total creative freedom when it comes to designing a website. Plus, its drag-and-drop editor makes it super easy to get started – even if you’re a beginner at building!
Each template comes fully formed, with dummy text and images already in place. To really make the template your own, you’ll need to switch out this dummy content with your own colors, images, messages, and more!
Wix makes basic tweaks very easy. For example, to edit text, just click the dummy text and type away. Changing its size is also a simple matter of dragging a slider:
When you start getting more creative, Wix really comes into its own. You’ll soon find you can turn that template into something special.
Wix offers a huge library of professional photos, graphics and videos, all free to use on your site. Wix’s free media content can save you tons of time and decision-making.
Wix also has hundreds of additional site features, which you can add by dragging them onto the template.
You can add blogs, restaurant menus, contact forms, music players, maps, interactive slideshows, video backgrounds… much more than we have room to list here!

Ecommerce: Can You Sell Online With Wix?
Yes, you can absolutely sell online using Wix!
Wix lets you sell an unlimited amount of products – whether physical, digital, or service-based. You can also create discount and promotional codes, control your shipping options, and even manage your store on the go through its mobile app. The mobile app in particular is an asset, since mobile commerce is expected to climb to an expected 62% by 2027.
In fact, our research shows that Wix – with a 4.7 out of 5 ecommerce rating – is the best choice for someone looking to start an ecommerce store. In recent years, Wix has made considerable improvements to its ecommerce offering, upgrading its sales features across the board. As a result, it scores a very impressive 4.4 out of 5 for this category.
It’s also a cheaper price point compared to the likes of Shopify and BigCommerce, which means Wix is a great option for anyone starting out on the ecommerce scene.
That said, if you’re generating six-figure monthly profits and need a powerful platform capable of managing bulk orders and scaling with you, you’ll want to opt for either Shopify or BigCommerce. Shopify scored a glowing 4.7 out of 5 for its sales features, making it our top recommendation for growing online stores.
Wix has also put a lot of energy into making its ecommerce analytics more powerful. Through its dashboard store analytics, you can now access in-house data to rival that of dedicated ecommerce platforms.

Wix allows you to create blog posts, separate them into categories, and even add a comments section and search bar for your users. Perfect if you want a blogging section on your site – and most of us do, since companies with blogs generate 55% more website visits than those without.
For a more rounded experience, though, you can’t look past Squarespace. Its blogging features are more advanced than Wix’s, and its blogging designs are better too. Explore our list of the best blogging platforms to see how Squarespace and Wix compare.
A Note On Scalability
When speaking to our users, some expressed concern about whether you could outgrow a Wix website. This is a valid concern – the last thing you want is for your website builder to fall short of the task just as your business is blowing up in all the right ways. Luckily, Wix has made its platform fully adaptable, so that no matter how big you want to go, your website can handle it.
Its dedicated team of experts works around the clock to manage this ambitious infrastructure and maintain its 99.98% uptime. You won’t need to panic about how your larger website will sustain its performance, even amidst a huge traffic surge. Wix also employs cutting-edge technologies to make sure that your website can be accessed quickly and securely across the world, and attain the highest international standard of security certificates and PCI DSS compliance. This means that your data and the data of all of your customers is as safe and protected as it possibly can be.
Aside from the technical stuff, Wix’s app market is also great for scalability, and is always releasing new, exciting add-ons that will enhance its websites – either in terms of the functions it can perform, or the quality of existing ones.
If you need a big, powerful website (ecommerce or otherwise), in most cases, Wix will have exactly what you need. However, we would encourage you to explore the other options that are out there if you want to run an extremely large, enterprise-level business or a very complex site. Otherwise, Wix’s developers are constantly improving the platform, and it keeps pace with almost every need. We’ll walk you through Wix’s tools and features in the next section!
Wix’s Tools and Features
Wix scores 4.8 out of 5 for its website features, which is a slight 1% drop in score since last year’s research. However, Wix is still the number one website builder for features overall. If you want the overall takeaway for this section, we can tell you that Wix has excellent, scalable features, all built-in to the platform.
Unlike with Shopify, there’s little need to rely on third-party apps when using Wix!
The best part? The majority of these amazing features are available on Wix’s free plan, but we’d recommend upgrading as soon as possible to enjoy the best features Wix has to offer, such as website analytics and unlimited storage.
Here’s a quick look at Wix’s key features:
- App Market: If you need extra features, Wix’s app market is well stocked with hundreds of free and paid integrations that you can install with a single click
- Domain names: All of Wix’s annual premium plans come with a free domain name for the first year
- Social media integration: Connect your site to your social media accounts with social buttons
- SEO: Wix’s SEO Wiz tool creates a personalized action plan for you to follow to optimize your site for search engines like Google
- Security: Your site automatically comes with a free SSL certificate, an autosave feature, and free backups
- Marketing: Wix Ascend is Wix’s in-house all-in-one marketing suite, which includes email marketing, live chat, and Wix automations

Basically, this means there are certain tools that Wix doesn’t provide as part of its core services, so to fill this void, Wix provides 1-click, hassle-free installation of tools made by external service providers.
Wix apps are like the “plugins” you can add to WordPress, or the “extensions” you can add to Chrome; different names, basically the same thing.
“Serving the Wix website owners is our number one priority. Our goal is to offer a wide choice of apps that provide the popular and niche features Wix users have been asking for or that address current and future market trends.” – Avishai Abrahami, Wix CEO & Founder
Wix App Market includes useful integrations such as shopping carts, live chat widgets, and marketing tools. In our recent research, we gave Wix’s app market a perfect score of 5 out of 5. A lot of these apps are completely free, although some offer you premium versions for a small monthly fee so that you can access even more functions.
App spotlight: 123FormBuilder
With hundreds of apps to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start. We recommend 123FormBuilder, which is a cloud-based software designed to work for any business and individual that need to collect data online and offline. Its flexible platform offers a variety of possibilities for creating any type of form, survey, questionnaire, quiz, poll, and even time-sheets

Connecting your website to your social media accounts is a great way of increasing engagement for both. Wix allows you to add social buttons, likes, shares, feeds, and follower counts to your website, so people can easily find and follow you anywhere.
We also noticed considerable improvements to Wix’s SEO services during our recent testing, including new features such as Semrush integration and keyword support.
There’s a whole host of SEO apps available from Wix’s app market if you need additional support, though. From our own SEO testing, only Squarespace and WordPress.com match Wix’s SEO offerings.

Wix's Security
When it comes to choosing a website builder, security is always high on a user’s lists of concerns. After all, no one wants to invest a chunk of time into building the perfect website for it to be flayed open and plundered by hackers! So is Wix a safe option to use, and will your data – and that of your customers – be protected?
The short answer is yes! Wix comes with a ton of built-in features that help to keep your website safe and secure. These include:
- In-built SSL certificate – every Wix site is served over HTTPS, which means it’s protected by an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate
- Customer log-in area – all of your customers will have their designated area of your site
- Ability to have securely pre-saved card details – any payment details your customers save are secure and protected
- PCI Compliant – the gold standard for ecommerce security, this is the highest standard of security, keeping payment details safe from theft and fraud
- Double payment authentication for online payments – double authentication reduces the success of fraudulent payment attempts
How Good Is Wix's Help and Support?
Wix’s help and support score has increased by 10% since last year, receiving a new rating of 4.8 out of 5. This makes it one of the best builders for support, sitting in first place with Squarespace and IONOS.
But what sets Wix’s help and support apart?
Wix scatters question mark buttons throughout its editor to provide step-by-step guides, no matter where you are in the building process. These buttons might be small in size, but they’re enormously helpful!
Each button opens up a box packed with clever tips about the tool it’s attached to, drawn from Wix’s massive Help Center. Some pop-ups even feature a step-by-step tutorial:
If you’re looking for a more personal touch, Wix also provides a 24/7 phone and live chat service. And, if you upgrade to a higher premium plan, you can even get access to VIP care.
Wix Example Gallery
It’s all very well reading a long Wix review, but all that research can be pretty tiring. If what you really need is some inspiration, here’s a quick tour of three websites that are using Wix to show exactly what you can create using this website builder…
#1. CeliaB: Fashion
Celia Bernado is the founder of CeliaB, a fashion brand that uses Wix to showcase its vibrant products. This site uses Wix’s ecommerce tools to sell its items, and also features video, slideshow galleries, newsletter subscriptions, social integration, and more.
#2. Useless Treasures: Graphic Design Shop and Studio
Useless Treasures is a graphic design website that uses Wix to combine both shop and studio – we like how this site merges ecommerce with a portfolio vibe. It’s a great showcase of Wix’s galleries and animation features as well as its ecommerce capabilities.
#3. Mikaela Reuben: Culinary Nutrition Consulting
Mikaela Reuben is a culinary nutrition consultant, and her website features recipes, videos, and even a press section to help her connect with clients. We like how this site showcases Wix’s video backgrounds, contact form, search feature, and lightbox in particular. They work together to create a really professional site!

Wix Review: Summary
To put it simply, Wix has something for everyone. For businesses, Wix has brilliant templates, SEO and marketing tools, plus tons of built-in features and apps to help you scale. For personal sites, you have everything you need for blogging, portfolios, or CVs at your fingertips.
Our 2023 research crowned Wix as the best website builder on the market, receiving an overall score of 4.8 out of 5. We’ve reviewed its pricing, templates, and more throughout this article, so let’s recap why we think Wix is great:
- Ease of use: Anyone can create a professional, powerful website using Wix – no coding skills required
- Templates and design functionality: Wix has over 800 professionally designed templates to choose from, and you get tons of creative freedom thanks to its drag-and-drop editor
- Built-in features: Wix’s plans come with incredible internal features so it’s unlikely you’ll need to turn to third-party apps for help
- Help and support: Its 24/7 live chat and phone support, as well as its detailed knowledge center, make Wix one of the best for help and support
Wix doesn’t have everything for everyone, though. It falls short in these areas:
- Technical ownership: You don’t have total control over the technical aspects of your site, such as hosting or server locations
- Locked templates: Wix doesn’t let you switch templates once your site is live which makes redesigns tricky
- Overwhelming tools: Though Wix is incredibly easy to use, beginners might feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice and features available
- Features vs price: Wix’s best features are locked behind premium plans, so you’ll need to pay more to unlock them
None of these drawbacks are real dealbreakers for us. For example, for those less tech-savvy, the lack of technical upkeep is a positive rather than a negative. It leaves you free to focus on running your site instead of struggling to handle updates or security issues.
It’s also important to remember that, although this review has focused on Wix as a website builder, it’s also an awesome ecommerce platform, too. In fact, in our research, it came in first place, so it’s an ideal choice if you’re planning to open an online store.
Overall, Wix is easy (and free) to get started with, so if you’re still in any doubt about whether it’s right for you, we definitely recommend giving it a try yourself. After all, that’s the only way you’ll know for sure whether Wix is the right choice for your needs!
